Lesson 1: Intro to Direct Oil Painting Lesson 2: Intro to Indirect Oil Painting
Lesson Idea and Relevance:
In these two lessons, students will learn two different approaches of painting which will act as a foundation for them to choose what technique they wish to use in their final painting. Students will understand that they can bridge concepts and methods that have been taught for years and create something new. Drawing and Painting 3 students will have opportunities to ideate, create, and experiment. These lessons are a continuation of their bone still life paintings where some of their previous skills and paint application techniques can be applied. The students will have the opportunity to learn about the history of oil painting as well as how to properly use, store, and clean the materials. Additionally, they will learn the grisaille, direct, and indirect painting methods. Students at this level have experimented with acrylic and watercolor paint before giving them the foundation to where to start (for example: mixing paint, tonal ranges etc.). At the Drawing and Painting 3 level, the students will be able to learn the basics to oil painting so they can have the essential skills needed before moving onto the AP or College level. Some of the previous approaches to painting will be applied such as mixing the paint, blending, dry brushing etc.
Performance: Students will be equipped with the foundational painting skills needed in order to be successful for their final Bonescapes project.

Grading Criteria:
After the teacher gives a short demonstration on the direct painting approach, students will apply what was learned in the demonstration to their own bone still life at their table.
Students will reflect in their journals at the end of class with what they learned/discoveries made and 2 questions they still have about their painting; regarding the oil-painting process or specific questions about their painting.
Performance of understanding will be judged by:
Student can define the terms used when painting with oil-paint.
Student can distinguish the difference between indirect and direct painting by creating 3 still life paintings with one using the direct method, one using indirect (grisaille) and one painting of their choice (either direct or indirect).
Student can discuss the creative process and decision making that went into their still life paintings.
Students’ reflection in their journals will indicate their comfortability with the new material and also what they still need more assistance on.
Student engaged with the materials in a safe and appropriate manner, and was responsible for cleaning up his/her work space.
